Arsenal faced Chelsea in Baku, Azerbaijan, in Wednesday night’s Europa League final.

The opening quarter of an hour was fairly cagey, with both sides feeling their way into the game. Arsenal started to play a little more direct and the game began to open up. Alex Lacazette was denied twice by the Chelsea goalkeeper, Kepa, and Granit Xhaka hit a rocket from 25 yards that grazed the top of the crossbar. Chelsea grew into the half and Petr Cech was forced into two good saves. The second was a fine reaction stop, low to his left, to keep out Giroud. Both sides had their chances in the first half, but they went in all square at the break.

The second half got off to the worst possible start when Giroud scored with a header inside the opening five minutes. Pedro doubled the Chelsea lead on the hour mark, and five minutes later Hazard converted a penalty to make it 3-0. Alex Iwobi came on to make an instant impact, scoring an excellent volley to give Arsenal a small chance of getting back into it, but Harzard scored the fourth minutes later. Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea side were deserved winners of the 2018/19 Europa League.
