Arsenal were back at Emirates Stadium after returning from their tour of the USA. Unai Emery’s team faced Lyon in the Emirates Cup on Sunday afternoon.
Alex Lacazette was in the starting line-up to play against his former team but he took a knock to his foot in the opening minutes and had to be replaced by Reiss Nelson. The first big chance of the game arrived when Ainsley Maitland-Niles lifted the ball into Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s path; the Armenian’s powerful volley was parried away by Lopes in the Lyon goal and Joe Willock was unable to hit the target with his follow-up shot. Mkhitaryan was very active in the game and had another first-time effort saved by the ‘keeper on the half-hour mark. Five minutes later, he turned provider when he slid a low cross into the box for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to finish nicely from 6 yards out.
The second half saw Unai Emery make changes to the line-up and formation with Eddie Nketiah coming on to partner Aubameyang up front. Arsenal carried on creating chance to increase the lead, but Lyon got back on level terms through a Dembele header from an excellent Depay cross. Dani Ceballos came on to make his Arsenal debut with twenty minutes to play and Gabriel Martinelli was brought on for his Emirates Stadium debut. Dembele got his second to put Lyon ahead in the 75th minute. Aubameyang came inches away from equalising in the closing stages but his lob hit the upright and went wide.
Arsenal’s next pre-season friendly is this Wednesday evening against French side, SCO Angers, at the Stade Raymond Kopa.
