Unai Emery’s Arsenal travelled to the North East to face Newcastle United on the opening weekend of fixtures in the Premier League.

Arsenal knew they would face a tough task against Steve Bruce’s team and the heavy rain that fell throughout the game made it difficult for both teams to maintain possession. The first half saw plenty of tackles flying in and lots of energy and commitment from both teams. Bernd Leno had to make an excellent save to keep out a well-struck Jonjo Shelvey effort. In attack, Arsenal’s first real chance fell to Henrikh Mkhitaryan but he was unable to keep his shot down and it flew over the bar. The second half started with Arsenal on the front foot and more fluent in possession, and the Gunners took the lead just before the hour-mark. Ainsley Maitland-Niles found Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang with a great ball into the box and last season’s joint golden boot winner made no mistake with his calm finish. Nicolas Pepe, Dani Ceballos and Gabriel Martinelli all came on to make their Premier League debuts and Arsenal managed to see out the rest of the game without coming under too much pressure from the home side.

Arsenal’s next match is Saturday’s early kick-off against Burnley at Emirates Stadium.
