Wednesday evening saw Arsenal back in action in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals at Emirates Stadium against Tottenham.

The match started positively for Arsenal with good intensity and energetic attacking play, from Alex Iwobi and Aaron Ramsey in particular. Indeed it the Welshman who sent Henrikh Mkhitaryan through on goal early on, but the opposition goalkeeper, Gazzaniga, reacted well to deny Arsenal an early lead. Soon after, Heung-Min Son ran onto a long ball over the top and finished to put his side a goal up. Arsenal created various chances in the latter part of the first half as they pushed for an equaliser before the break. Ramsey’s volley crashed against the post and Sokratis was unable to get his header on target from a corner.

The second half saw the introduction of Laurent Koscielny as Unai Emery’s team switched to a back three. Granit Xhaka’s free kick rose just above the bar and just as it seemed Arsenal were gaining the upper hand, Tottenham’s Dele Alli got on the end of another ball over the top and finished to double his team’s lead. Alexandre Lacazette came on and almost got one back but his effort hit the post, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang saw his cross hit the bar. It was that kind of night for Arsenal.

The team now turn their attention to Saturday’s Premier League fixture against Burnley at Emirates Stadium.
