Arsenal lose first leg of Europa league tie away at Rennes (3-1)
7 March, 2019
Arsenal were away in the first leg of the Europa League last-16 tie against Rennes on Thursday evening.
Unai Emery’s side got off the perfect start with a fortunate goal from Alex Iwobi; his curling cross flew past everyone and went in off the post in the 4th minute. Lucas Torreira tested the Rennes ‘keeper soon after, and Iwobi nearly doubled the lead with another well-struck shot. But the home side, pushed on by their crowd, were suddenly given a way back into it when Sokratis was sent off for a second yellow. From the free kick, Bourigeaud hit the wall and then struck the rebound into the top corner.
The second half saw Rennes on the attack, trying to take advantage of the extra man. Petr Cech had to make important saves to keep it level, but the hosts took the lead through a cross which took a deflection off Nacho Monreal. And with two minutes to go, Sarr got a header at the back post to make it 3-1 to the home side. Arsenal will have to turn it around in the second leg at Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal now turn their attention to the Premier League match against Manchester United on Sunday.
