Arsenal play in Angers SCO centenary match (1-1, Arsenal win 3-4 on pens)
31 July, 2019
Arsenal’s next pre-season friendly was away against Ligue 1 side, Angers SCO. There was a special atmosphere at the Stade Raymond Kopa as the home fans were celebrating their club’s centenary.
And it was Angers who started better, with Farid El Melali scoring inside the opening fifteen minutes. He was set up by an excellent Baptiste Santamaria pass and rounded Emi Martinez before finishing. Arsenal couldn’t really find their rhythm throughout the first half and went in at the break 1-0 down.
Unai Emery made five changes at the break and the team started the second half much more brightly. In the 49th minute, Matteo Guendouzi made space for himself out wide and fired a cross into the box; Eddie Nketiah’s instinctive finish was parried by Ludovic Butelle in the Angers goal, but Reiss Nelson pounced on the rebound to equalise for the Gunners. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had a goal disallowed for off-side and also hit a shot over the bar after being set up by Henrik Mkhitaryan. The game went to penalties and it was Emi Martinez who came out on top with the key save against former Gunner Jeff Reine-Adelaide to give Arsenal a 3-4 shoot-out win.
Arsenal’s next friendly is against FC Barcelona at the Camp Nou, on Sunday, 4th of August.
